1-7 August is World Breastfeeding Week!
Before becoming a mother, my primary focus was giving birth, and I assumed breastfeeding would come naturally without any challenges.
However, the reality was a tough journey with tears as I navigated the physical and emotional aspects of establishing breastfeeding in those overwhelming early postnatal days.
Here are three valuable tips I wish I had known before having my first baby:
1️⃣ Learn About Breastfeeding During Pregnancy
Understand the mechanism and hormones involved in breastfeeding before the busy postnatal period starts. Birth and breastfeeding are closely connected, and this knowledge can be a great benefit in the early days.
2️⃣ Connect with Other Breastfeeding Mums/Parents
Seek out local breastfeeding support groups or counsellors during pregnancy, so you have a network of support in the early postnatal days.
Connecting with other mums who are already breastfeeding can provide valuable insights and a space to share your challenges and joys.
For those in Aberaeron, I highly recommend the welcoming and lovely breastfeeding support group Nyth y Fron at RAY Ceredigion. Link in bio.
3️⃣ Do What Works for You and Your Baby
Remember, there's no one-size-fits-all approach to breastfeeding. You and your baby will both be learning this new skill together.
Be gentle with yourself, and explore what works best for both of you.
